How do I convert cubic yards of sand to tons?
Multiply the volume by the density of your sand type. Most construction sand runs 1.3-1.5 tons per cubic yard, but bagged product labels give the most accurate figure for your material.
Does this account for compaction?
No. The calculator estimates loose volume. Compacted fill settles, so many contractors add 10-15% extra material as a waste and compaction allowance.
